Process
The City of Lynnwood hires experienced police officers for open police officer positions. Applications are accepted from lateral entry police officer applicants on a continuous basis. Candidates not meeting departmental standards are so advised in writing within two weeks of receipt of the application. As vacancies occur, applications from candidates meeting departmental standards are reviewed. From this applicant pool candidates are selected for a command staff interview.
Based on the totality of qualifications presented by the applicant and the command staff interview, the candidate may be given a conditional offer of employment. Candidates selected must successfully pass a polygraph examination, psychological assessment, medical examination, and background investigation.
There is no physical fitness testing of lateral police applicants.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have been employed as a full time paid law enforcement officer with a municipal, county or state law enforcement agency for at least 24 months, continually, within the past 36 months. Employment as a military police officer, Federal Special Agent, investigator or police officer, corrections officer, reserve police officer or special jurisdiction officer (transit officer, tribal police officer, campus or hospital security, housing or port authority officer, etc.) does not satisfy this experience requirement.
- Must have satisfactorily completed the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy or meet the standards prescribed by the Washington State Training Criminal Justice Training Commission for equivalency.
Evaluation Criteria
The following criteria are emphasized in selecting successful lateral entry police officers:
- A record of solid performance and a high level of achievement as a police officer, particularly in patrol operations.
- The currency, activity and professional demand level of experience of the candidate.
- Professional training and the acquisition of advanced police skills.
- Oral and written communications, interpersonal and negotiation skills and a command presence.
