Citizens Patrol

 

The Lynnwood Citizens Patrol has taken an active role in addressing crime concerns in the City of Lynnwood in a unique and efficient way. This group of citizens utilizes department vehicles to serve as additional eyes and ears for the police. The citizens, working in teams of 2, patrol the streets of Lynnwood 7 nights a week from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM and have spotted DUI's and stolen vehicles, reported suspicious persons, performed extra watch in problem areas, monitored school bus stops, and have earned respect and acceptance from the patrol officers. Positive feedback has also been forthcoming from residents and members of the business community.

LPD Citizens' Patrol receives a check for $1,000 from the Alderwood Mervyn's.
The money is to be used for two new Citizens' Patrol bicycles.


Personnel
Members of the Citizens Patrol are selected from graduates of the 14-week long Citizens Academy. They also receive additional training in the following areas:

  • Use of police radio
  • Recognizing suspicious activity
  • Report writing
  • Emergency vehicle operations
  • Directing traffic
  • First aid
  • Fire supression
  • Crime scene preservation
  • Public relations
  • Bike patrol
  • Disabled parking violations

Members range in age from 26 to 66 and most work full-time in a variety of jobs such as computer programmer, engineer, public relations, teacher, symphony conductor, psychologist, homemaker, apartment manager, para-legal, and banker. In 2000, Citizens Patrol (with VIPS) donated almost 8,500 hours to the police department and community to Lynnwood to help make the city a safer place to live and work.
