What's Happening Now
  • The project is continuing on schedule and on budget.
  • The architect submitted the application for the City building permit on September 28.
  • The architect and design team issued completed 100% Construction Documents on October 16.
  • The contractor and staff continue to work with the Fire Marshal’s office on a plan to meet the operational needs of the City and the contractor throughout construction, with appropriate risk management measures in place.
  • Staff is on track with plans to close the Recreation Center for construction at 5:00pm on Saturday, December 19. All aquatics and racquetball activities will be cancelled during the closure. Other activities, including cardio/weight room, preschool, classes and registration/information will move to the North Administration Building and the Lynnwood Senior Center. Check the Recreation brochure or City website for updates. Call (425) 670-5732 for more information.

Pool Roof Goes on for the Last Time!

Since 1977, the Recreation Center has had an indoor/outdoor pool with a removable roof. Every June, except for the summer of 1985, Ness Crane of Seattle has come to lift off the 3,500-pound tarp and return it each September.

It takes more than 20 staff to place the custom-fit tarp made of vinyl-coated polyester which is assembled in three sections. Four days are needed to prepare the grounds, truck in equipment, take the roof out of summer storage, assemble it, and install it. The original tarp roof lasted until 1986 and was replaced with the tarp currently being used. The current tarp was expected to last between 10-15 years but has survived with repairs for 23 years.

This year, on September 17, the crane replaced the Rec Center roof for the last time. The roof will remain on the building during construction to provide protection for the lap pool, until it is replaced by a translucent roof system with partially retractable panels before the 2011 re-opening. This roof system will improve air quality and temperature controls in the pool areas and allow for more natural light to penetrate the building year-round.

Going Green

LEED LogoEnergy efficiency is an important element of the project, with a goal to become a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building. This project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council and intends to pursue certification under USGBC's LEED program.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

The  building has been designed to include the following:
  • low flow toilets and low flow shower heads with timed shut-off valves in the main locker rooms
  • high efficiency rooftop heat pumps
  • high efficiency condensing boilers for heating the pool water
  • high efficiency natatorium dehumidifiers with heat recovery units
  • variable frequency drives on all pool pumps/motors
  • solar preheat units for domestic hot water (bid alternate)
  • water-saving regenerative media pool filtration systems

Direct digital controls will provide control of all HVAC equipment and functions and will include automatic night setback for energy savings in unoccupied areas. The new pool skylight will be significantly more energy efficient than the existing fabric tarp.

The Design Team and City staff are also working with Puget Sound Energy and Snohomish PUD to define energy efficient measures and equipment for potential gas, electricity and water savings over the life of the building, in addition to energy rebates after construction.

Public Art

As part of the Lynnwood’s 1% for Public Art program, the City will select an artist to create a unique work of art for the renovated and expanded Recreation Center.
Several exterior sites or “zones” for public art have been identified by the City near the Recreation Center’s front entrance for artwork that:

  • is an outdoor, visually beautiful work of art
  • is colorful, fun, playful, iconic, gathering space
  • invites people to interact with the artwork

A panel including citizens, a councilmember, and local arts professionals will select the artist from a pool of applicants.  For more information, visit www.LynnwoodArts.org or contact Fred Wong, Cultural Arts Supervisor.
