 Project Update

Plumbing InstalledDemolition is complete and construction has begun - and the project is on schedule and under budget!

Passersby have seen dramatic changes to the building in the past month - site utilities, locker room, and pool plumbing are complete. Nearly 150 truckloads of dirt and 128 truckloads of debris have been removed.

Some have asked why the City didn’t just take down the whole Recreation Center. Selective demolition has resulted in considerable cost savings. By salvaging portions of the building the City saved an estimated $1.3 million in construction costs and reduced the amount of construction waste going to the landfill.

Artist Selected

Artist RenderingSeattle artist Susan Zoccola has been selected to create outdoor public art for the Recreation Center. The artwork will consist of three sculptural towers made of blue resin and steel, and will be lit from the inside with LED light. The artist’s inspiration for the work is water, and the many fun shapes water takes. The artwork will be completed in April 2011, when the Recreation Center is scheduled to re-open.

Fun Facts

  • Roughly 1,000 yards of dirt have been excavated for building footings
  • Roughly 1,000 linear feet of pipe have been placed for underground piping
  • Approximately 75 yards of concrete were poured for the locker room slab on grade
