Fire Marshal Services
- Business License Inspections
-
When a business license application is submitted, an inspector will come to your business site. The inspector is primarily checking to make sure that exit pathways are clear, exit signs are lit and working, fire extinguishers have been serviced in the past 12 months, door locks are usable by persons with disabilities, and that the address sign for the main building is readable from the street. These inspections help to ensure that the space is safe for staff and customers in the event of an emergency.
-
- Fire Alarms and Central Monitoring Stations
-
All fire alarm systems within the City of Lynnwood are required to be monitored by an approved Central Monitoring Station (CMS). A building owner may have their fire alarm serviced by a fire alarm service company of their choosing; the fire alarm service company simply programs the alarm panel to transmit all signals to an approved CMS. This list ensures the fire alarm signals are received and processed by a facility that meets all local requirements.
-
If you do not see your preferred CMS on the list of approved stations, please have the organization submit the application below.

- Development Project Planning and Development
-
Plans and permits are required for fire alarms, fire sprinklers, and alternative suppression system installations. The Fire Prevention Division reviews construction and fire protection systems plans and documents to verify adherence to all applicable codes.
-
Members of the Fire Prevention Division work closely with developers and contractors in the pre-development phase of construction. Our staff assists project planners with information regarding local fire regulations and permitting requirements and processes.
-
For permit applications and required submittal information, please visit the Permit Applications & Submittal Requirements webpage.
-
- Fire and Life Safety Inspections
-
The Prevention Division conducts inspections to verify code compliance in new construction and tenant improvements. These inspections ensure that all construction adheres to approved plans and applicable codes.
-
Inspectors perform annual life safety inspections of all commercial and multi-family occupancies. These inspections are provided to mitigate hazards and reduce the likelihood of fire or other related emergencies occurring within the workplace or multi-family home.
-
- Fire Investigations
-
The Fire Marshal’s Office is tasked with the investigation of fires occurring within the City of Lynnwood. The role of the investigator is to determine the origin, cause, and circumstances surrounding the fire with the goal of identifying situations, products, persons and actions that have attributed to its cause.
-
- Periodic Fire Systems Testing
-
Fire Prevention Personnel monitor the performance of confidence testing of all fire and life safety systems within the city. These reports are then reviewed by our office to ensure that all systems are in proper operational order to provide adequate protection when needed. All test reports are submitted through the online reporting system TEGRISFire.com.
-
Failure to submit these confidence tests in a timely manner may result in a Notice and Order that the building is unsafe to occupy.
- What is TEGRISFire, and why am I receiving notices from them regarding my building?
-
TEGRISFire is an online reporting tool used by the Fire Marshal’s Office to streamline the process of gathering, reviewing, and summarizing life safety systems testing and inspection data. TEGRISFire stores all submitted data that has been provided by the inspection companies. This data is then available to the property owner and to the Fire Marshal’s Office for easy verification of system readiness.
-
As TEGRISFire tracks all previous inspections, it also is able to send automated notices to both property owners and their chosen inspection companies to let them know when their systems are due. Property owners receive a notice 30 days before their system due date as a courtesy reminder. They then receive an Overdue Notice 30 days after the due date and a Final Notice, 60 days after the due date. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Fire Marshal’s Office or online at TEGRISInc.com.
-
- How often do my fire extinguishers/sprinkler/fire alarm/hood systems need to be serviced or tested?
-
Fire extinguishers need to be inspected and serviced annually or whenever the gauge shows the extinguisher has lost pressure. A tag showing who inspected it and the date of the inspection is required to be affixed to the extinguisher.
-
Fire alarm systems need to be serviced anytime a trouble signal is reported. They also need to be tested at least annually. These repairs and test must be performed by a Washington State-licensed electrician with a “06” or higher Electrical License who is employed by a Washington State Electrical Contractor with a City of Lynnwood business license. Test results must be entered into the web-based reporting site TEGRISFire.com.
-
Fire sprinklers must be kept in working order at all times. Each system is required to be inspected and tested annually by a person with a current Washington State Inspection and Testing Technician certificate from the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office. This individual must also be employed by a Washington State-licensed Fire sprinkler contractor with a City of Lynnwood business license. Test results must be entered into the web-based reporting site TEGRISFire.com.
-
Commercial kitchen hood suppression systems are required to be inspected every 6 months by a person who hass been trained by the suppression system manufacturer. This person or business must have a valid City of Lynnwood business license. Test results must be entered into the web-based reporting site TEGRISFire.com.
-
- How do I submit my confidence test reports?
-
Confidence test reports are submitted by the sprinkler, fire alarm, and hood testing companies. These reports are required by city ordinance to be submitted through our online reporting site – TEGRISFire.com. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Fire Marshal’s Office or online at TEGRISInc.com.
-
- My service company has recently tested my sprinkler/fire alarm/hood system – why am I continuing to get notices from TEGRIS?
-
Overdue Notices will continue to be sent out to property owners until their service provider has submitted the report into the TEGRISFire system. Property Owners will also receive Deficiency Letters if the testing has uncovered a problem with the system that needs to be resolved. If you receive one of these notices after your system has been tested, please contact your service provider and ask that they assist you either by report submittal or by addressing the needed system repairs.
