Lynnwood Healthy Communities
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SNOHOMISH HEALTH DISTRICT

Purpose
To provide a framework in which Lynnwood’s policymakers can build and support an environment that makes it easier for Lynnwood residents to choose healthy foods and be physically active.
| The Healthy Communities framework comes from the Washington State Department of Health, and was developed in response to rapidly rising rates of obesity and chronic disease. Currently, Snohomish Health District is partnering with the cities of Marysville, Lynnwood and Everett to address each city’s unique needs.
Lynnwood is not immune to the obesity epidemic. In 2005, 31 percent of Lynnwood residents were overweight, and an additional 26 percent were obese. Only 37 percent of Lynnwood residents meet national recommendations for moderate physical activity. Eighty-one percent of Lynnwood adults consume less than five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. These statistics can be discouraging, but there is hope. Our current environment does not always support physical activity and healthy eating. Lynnwood Healthy Communities will work to build on Lynnwood’s strengths and take a “big picture” approach to needed policy and environmental changes. |
