Lynnwood Healthy Communities

The City of Lynnwood remains deeply committed to the Healthy Communities initiative it started in 2007.
|
As we know, Lynnwood is not immune to the obesity epidemic. In 2005, 31 percent of Lynnwood residents were overweight, and an additional 26 percent were obese. Only 37 percent of Lynnwood residents meet national recommendations for moderate physical activity. Eighty-one percent of Lynnwood adults consume less than five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
These statistics can be discouraging, but there is hope. Our current environment does not always support physical activity and healthy eating. Lynnwood Healthy Communities will work to build on Lynnwood’s strengths and take a “big picture” approach to needed policy and environmental changes. |
CDC's Healthy Communities Program

|
The City of Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Department was selected as one of ten organizations across the U.S. to receive a $30,000 ACHIEVE grant from the CDC and the National Recreation and Parks Association. The grant is specifically designed to create policies that will improve the health of our population. It is primarily focused on the obesity issues we face all over the country and the emphasis will be to create policies and strategies that target physical activity, nutrition, obesity and cardio vascular diseases.
Two policy issues are the focus for the ACHIEVE grant. They are as follows:
-
To provide the community the opportunity to access fresh, healthy produce at a weekly Farmers Market.
-
To provide safe routes for biking and walking to one selected Lynnwood school location.

MOVING FORWARD- HOW CAN YOU HELP US?
Now that the two policy ideas have been created, there is a definite need to get more people involved to help us advance them. We have divided into two sub-committees which meet on a monthly basis. If you are interested in assisting us with these new policy ideas, please contact:
