Design/Construction Highlights

What’s happening now?  ~ July 12, 2010

  • The project continues on budget and on schedule.
  • Installation is almost complete for the translucent, partially retractable skylight roof over the existing lap pool.
  • Glulam beams and structural insulated panels were lifted into place by crane for the roof over the new north natatorium structure.
  • Roofing and interior wall framing began in the new cardio fitness room, entry lobby and locker room areas.
  • Seattle artist Susan Zoccola is coordinating installation of the public art sculpture. Ms. Zoccola was selected to create outdoor public art for the Recreation Center. The artwork will consist of three sculptural towers made of blue resin and steel, and will be lit from the inside with LED light. The artist’s inspiration for the work is water, and the many fun shapes water takes.

What's happening next?

  • mechanical systems ductwork, electrical rough in
  • construction on the parking lot across 44th Ave West
  • underground pool piping
  • excavation for the new leisure pool

Project Financing

On November 24, 2008, City Council voted to fund the Recreation Center renovation and expansion. The Council adopted two ordinances, including the financial plan and funding summary and the legal authority to increase the City's utility taxes to fund the project. The Council also approved the professional services contract for NAC|Architecture, the principal architect for the project.

The design and construction costs, estimated to between $22 million and $25.5 million, will be financed initially with bond anticipation notes (similar to a construction loan for private or residential capital projects). Upon completion of the project, the notes will be retired by the proceeds of permanent financing in the form of Limited Tax General Obligation Bonds amortized over a 20-year period.
